Adult Learnersâ Week 2005
Adult Learnersâ Week He Tangata Matauranga was established in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1998 with the goal of raising the profile of adult learning. The week brings together learners, education providers, policy makers and media at both regional and national levels.
A group of adult educators introduced the concept of an Adult Learnersâ Week to New Zealand after attending CONFINTEA V, the fifth International Conference on Adult Education, organised by UNESCO in Hamburg, Germany, in 1997. The conference recommended the establishment of an international Adult Learnersâ Week, which would incorporate International Literacy Day on September 8 each year.
Each year the event has taken on more momentum and it is now seen by stakeholders as an opportunity to celebrate the successes and achievements of everyone participating in Adult and Community Education (ACE). It has also become a vehicle for encouraging anyone in the wider community with needs or desires that can be met by ACE to consider adult education, whether it be learning to adjust to life in a new country, re-training to find employment, adjusting to life after prison, acquiring parenting skills or just getting out and doing an activity to make life better and meet people.
In Aotearoa New Zealand there are thousands of opportunities to take part in adult learning-learning which doesnât necessarily take place in classrooms, require enrolment, assignments or assessments. Each year around half a million adult New Zealanders participate in learning programmes.
In 2005 year Adult Learnersâ Week He Tangata Matauranga was celebrated from Monday
September 5 until Sunday September 11. The theme was Learning Never Stops- E Koru E Mutu Te Ako. The week was launched in Christchurch at the Maori Learning Centre at Christchurch Polytechnic. Christchurchâs events involved a variety of groups and organisations coming together to promote adult learning opportunities.
Aranui Adult Learnersâ Week
Aranui Adult learnersâ week seeks to promote the opportunities available in and around Aranui for learning, whether it be individuals or together as families.
There is a huge variety of activities and taster courses taking place from the 5th â 11th September all over Aranui.
Developed from an idea coming out of the Aranui Community Adult learning group, the week is to co-inside with the national and local celebrations of Adult learnersâ Week.
Aranui Adult learnersâ week Co-ordinator Jacqui Te Wani, has worked hard at finding out what is going on in and around the Aranui Community. Based and employed by ACTIS (Aranui Community Trust incorporated society) Jacqui has been linking groups such as Ambrosia, Supergrans, The Community Learning Centre at Aranui High School, CPIT and Te Wanaga o Aotearoa to come up with a full week of opportunities all free of charge.
âThe Whole week is full of activities that will show what learning opportunities are available in the local area. With free child care available for those wishing to take part in these activities the idea is make it as easy as possible for people wanting to have a go and learn something, whatever that may beâ says Te Wani.
The Early Childhood Academy at Aranui High School is using this opportunity to support the community and learn while they do it by providing the supervised childcare.
With the support of the Aranui Community Adult learning group and funded by the TEC and The community Learning Centre at Aranui High School, the Aranui Adult learnersâ week will be a fun filled week of opportunities.
