Budget 2009
Each year over 200 NZ schools host more than 200,000 learners who come to participate in a wide range of courses such as computing, languages, fitness, arts & crafts, cooking and home maintenance. Schools also support their local community groups with funding to offer courses such as budgeting, literacy, ESOL and parenting.
In summary, the government announced that all current funding to schools for ACE will be cut from 2010. 20% of the existing funding will be reallocated to a small number of schools for the provision of literacy and numeracy programmes only.
Adult and Community Education can meet your needs as a learner
Ever thought about learning something new, or getting back to learning? Just want to try something different and affordable, maybe a new skill or refresh something you enjoyed previously?
Maybe you want to meet others with similar interests, and increase your skills for home and workplace.
Maybe you want to get a better job, improve your literacy and numeracy and your computer skills
Low fees or no fees
Maybe you want to study but are worried about the loans, allowances and whether it is the right course for you.
Maybe you want to have a go at something before you commit to other courses that are expensive and high risk.
PACE (Pegasus Adult and Community Education) takes away the maybes and offers you easy access to a variety of courses and short programmes to meet your needs and the requests of our communities. Fees are kept low to make these programmes as accessible as possible to everyone - some courses are even free!
A different learning experience
With highly skilled experienced tutors and small personal classes we provide responsive quality adult and community education in the Eastern Suburbs.
Adult and Community Education is not like secondary school - in an adult environment you will be treated as an equal. The special nature of adult leaning is that it is reciprocal in nature. As an adult learner you have as much to contribute as the tutor.
At PACE we understand adult learners
As adult learners you need to be free to direct yourself. Your tutors should actively involve you as an adult learner in the learning process and serve as facilitators.
Specifically, tutors should get learners input about what topics to cover and let them work on projects that reflect their interests.
As adults, we know you have accumulated a foundation of life experiences and knowledge that may include work-related activities, family responsibilities, and previous education. This needs to be connected to your learning in the courses or learning activity you choose.
When you enrol in a course, we think you will usually know what goal you want to attain. We will ensure your programme is well organised and has clearly defined learning outcomes.
Adults must see a reason for learning something. Your learning has to be applicable to your situation to be of value. This means that learning must be related to a setting familiar to learners.
Adults are practical, focusing on the aspects of a lesson most useful to them. They may not be interested in knowledge for its own sake. Tutors must tell participants explicitly how the lesson will be useful to them.
As with all learners, adults need to be shown respect. Tutors should acknowledge the wealth of experiences that adult learners bring to the programme. That means you will be treated as equals in experience and knowledge and your opinions will be valued.
